Chemistry and Networking

I often discuss chemistry and relationships in my personal growth and networking program. Some of the relationship principles in our personal life are the same in business. For example in a personal relationship, chemistry is about feeling, victory, challenge and emotional power. Well, in a business networking experience, it is also about the same things including spark, energy or attraction.

The scientific formula for chemistry is the identification of the substances of which matter is composed and the ways in which they interact, combine, and change; and the use of these processes to form new substances.

When we are in a business environment, networking is truly about chemistry (interaction, change and forming new connections. You know if there is chemistry and if the organization fulfills your needs and wants. You know if you belong. There is something called the “invisible connection.”

When networking, ask these questions to find out if there is chemistry to determine if you belong:

Communication – What tyoe of greeting do you receive? What type of response do you receive from individuals in the group? What voice do they use when speaking to you (welcoming, distance, etc)?

Relationship – Early warning that this might not be the right place for you includes the personalities in the room. Is this more of a social event than business, are people standoffish, do they avoid interaction, if so, is this what you are looking for? Determine what type of relationship you want.

Finally, do you have an emotional sense of happiness (that invisible connection) when you enter the room, if not maybe it is time to move down the hall to the real networking event?
